Medical Cannabis to Treat Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious medical condition that can have significant and long-lasting effects on a patient’s quality of life. As medical cannabis becomes increasingly popular and available, patients with TBI may be considering it as a potential treatment option. While pre-clinical research suggests that cannabinoids may have neuroprotective and psychotherapeutic properties, there is a lack of high-quality studies examining the effects of medical cannabis on TBI. However, observational studies show that patients with TBI are using both medical and recreational cannabis to manage their symptoms, highlighting the need for more empirical evidence.
Our systematic review identified 37 articles that met inclusion criteria, including one phase III randomized control trial. While some studies suggest that medical cannabis may aid in the recovery from TBI by reducing inflammation and modulating the endocannabinoid system, adverse cognitive and physiological effects have been observed in the acute and chronic settings. Drug-drug interactions are also a concern that has not been thoroughly studied.
In conclusion, while medical cannabis may have potential therapeutic benefits for patients with TBI, more research is needed to fully understand its efficacy and potential adverse effects. Studies with appropriate control groups are necessary to address the inconsistencies between public policy, perception of potential efficacy, and the empirical evidence available. It is important for patients to discuss the potential risks and benefits with their healthcare provider before considering medical cannabis as a treatment option.
Medical Marijuana
Safe & Legal
Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to breaking conventions and helping those in need. My passion for medicine began during my time working in refugee camps in Thailand, and since then, I have made it my mission to provide care and support to those who need it most.
As a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology, I have made numerous contributions and innovations in the field of corneal transplantation and laser surgery. I am comfortable challenging conventions.
I have seen firsthand the positive impact medical marijuana can have on patients struggling with pain and anxiety.
My experiences have shown me that medical marijuana can offer significant benefits with minimal side effects, providing patients with an alternative to traditional pharmaceutical medications. Despite its potential, the government’s stance on marijuana is outdated and in need of revision.
Through my observations, I have seen prescription rates for pain, stress, insomnia, anxiety to name just a few, drastically decrease among patients who have obtained a medical marijuana card, and I believe that this is a testament to its effectiveness.
